Lotts Farm is a small scale family run business in the Lake District's Cartmel valley within rural Cumbria. It produces and sells affordable, high quality outdoor reared meat, free range eggs and relishes from produce grown on the farm.

Who are we?

Lotts Farm was set up in 2013 by the Morrell family. Alex Morrell previously set up and ran a small horticultural social enterprise in London selling organically grown fruit and vegetables at local Farmers’ Markets.

Keen to leave the city and pursue a more rural lifestyle, he took a job on the L’Enclume farm in the village of Cartmel growing vegetables for the Michelin starred restaurant. It was through a friendship with a local farmer that he came across ‘The Lotts’ and began clearing the land and establishing what is now known as ‘Lotts Farm’.

This gave Alex an opportunity to develop his interest in rearing animals and together with his wife Rosy, they have set up the business and now make and sell their own products. Animal welfare is important to them and ensures their meat is of a high quality. It is also chemical free and unprocessed.

About the farm

Lotts Farm is 14 acres. The farm’s geography is diverse and best described as rough fell. It includes marshland, a water meadow, a beck, woodland, rocky outcrops and grassland.

Some areas of thorn and gorse are cleared for grazing and the wood used to make charcoal. Pigs are kept on the cleared areas to root out thorns and briars. Then the pigs are moved and the land allowed to recover before being grazed by Herdwick sheep.

This process is ongoing. The small woodland is coppiced for charcoal, produced using traditional methods in a large kiln. Chickens range freely in the coppiced areas. Herbs and seasonal ingredients are grown on the farm and used in meat products and homemade relishes.
